CUPCAKE GIVEAWAY BY THE BEKIRY! (WINNERS ANNOUNCED)

One evening, my sister called me from across the room. "Ate Kiten! Listen to this, 'Mga kwento ng mga becky na cupcake na gusto nang magladlad." We burst out laughing. "Witty, ha. Kanino 'yan?" I muttered.

Turns out, it was a poster from THE BEKIRY - a small cupcake enterprise - run by my sister's high school classmate, Michelle, together with two college friends. The cupcakes, aside from the deliciously funny copy on their marketing materials, looked very enticing.

Fast forward to a few weeks later. I was on Facebook, and on my news feed were my office mates sharing The Bekiry's cupcake menu and raving about how yummy the cupcakes looked and how simply hilarious the names and materials were!

THE BEKIRY is a fun collaboration among three creative students a.k.a BEKERS: Michelle Duguil, Joselle dela Rosa, and Renzo Navarro. "We wanted to make the gay culture more digestible - literally," says Renzo. So whether you like it or you like it, you'll be forced to say Red Velveloosh, Blue Velveloosh, and I-Reese's-table when you order their bestsellers. Other cupcake names play around Chenes and Cream, Baby Charuth, and Twixie Dust.

Initially, they thought of getting into the business of baking cupcakes for fun - as a means to save money for their upcoming beach trip. Several cupcake order lines and tan lines later, they are still happily baking for their fans (fans?!) who keep coming back for seconds, thirds, and fourths.

And my favorite poster was something they made for Valentine's.

They've already been featured on TV and radio shows, so when I had a little chat with Renzo, I asked him, "If each of the bekers would have a screen name, what would it be?" He answered (in true Bekiry fashion), "Dugs would be Sisa because she's cray cray! Joselle would be Eva Fonda, ang babaeng walang pahinga. And I would be Zsazsa Zaturnnah!"

More than having friends as business partners, I think one of the main reasons why THE BEKIRY was and is a sure hit is because Michelle, Renzo, and Joselle try to make the world gayer (happier) one cupcake at a time.
